
Hockey Success
Scottish hockey enjoyed a 'Super Sunday' earlier in the month which saw
success
around the world for Scottish teams and representatives including a number
of
Dundee athletes.
- 3 Dundee players were part of the men's and women's
squads representing Team
GB at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Becky Ward (Dundee Wanderers
Hockey Club) started all 4 matches for the women's side that won gold
and Ross
Stott (formerly Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club) and Gavin Byers (Menzieshill
Hockey Club) were members of the men's squad that won bronze medals.

- The Scotland Under 21 Indoor Men's side gained promotion
to European A
Division
- Menzieshill Hockey Club's Indoor team beat England's
national team twice and
drew once in Paisley.
- Andrew Thornton (Menzieshill Hockey Club) captained
the Scottish side in a
Tri-Nations event in Southampton in December.
- Menzieshill Hockey Club
and Bonagrass Grove Ladies Hockey Club are Scottish
representatives at the forthcoming EuroHockey Indoor Club Championships.
Dundee United Sports Club
Jim McIlravey reported that 8 players from the club's
Under 15 team had been
selected for the 'Clubs for Young People National Team' - a real achievement
for the team and coach.
The club has been awarded £50,000 of Cashback
for Communities funding for the
development of changing facilities at Monymusk Park. This funding must
be
spent by 31 March 2009.
Scottish Speed Skating Championships
This event was hosted by Dundee Speed Skating Club
at Dundee Ice Arena on
Sunday 18 January 2009 with a great level of success for Dundee skaters.
Scott
Anderson came second in the Senior event and Murray Cochrane won the
junior
event. Both the junior and senior relay events were won by Dundee Speed
Skating Club.
Dundee Ice Skating Club
There was a lot of success for Dundee Ice Skating Club
at the recent British
Championships in Nottingham with the following results achieved:
Senior
Mens - Matthew Parr (1st)
Senior Ladies - Karly Robertson (2nd)
Junior Ladies - Jodie Easson (4th)
Novice Men - Mark Frost (2nd)
Dundee Ice Skating Club had the largest
number of entrants at the GB
Championships.
Matthew Parr will now represent GB at the Junior World
Championships and may
also be picked for the World Seniors. Karly Robertson will now represent
GB
at the European Championships in Helsinki which has just taken place
and also
at the Junior World Championships.
